Code Enforcement Officer

Codes Enforcement Officer:

PREFERRED:  Current NYS Code Enforcement certification from the Department of State.
• Administer and enforce all provisions of the NYS Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and other applicable laws, rules, and regulations related to building construction and alteration; which includes issuing and revoking permits.
• Oversee and participate in the inspection of various stages of construction and upon completion of buildings and structures ensuring that structures meet all codes.
• Prepare and maintain records including application forms, building permits, certificates of occupancy, and enforcement rules and regulations for approval by the local governing body.
• Issue written notices to correct unsafe, illegal, or dangerous conditions in existing structures.
• Prepare and submit reports on Code Enforcement activities to the municipal government.
• Process applications for the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals and forward them to the appropriate boards.
• Supervise and assign duties to office staff to ensure efficient department operations.
• Prepare and manage the annual Code Enforcement Department budget and report to the Town Supervisor.
• Minimum of three years of full-time, progressively responsible experience in building construction or skilled trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, or related fields, demonstrating proficiency in construction processes, techniques, and safety protocols.
• Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

• A working understanding of planning and development trends, including subdivision and zoning concepts. 
• Good knowledge of storm water management practices. 
• Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative relationship with public officials, building contractors, developers, and the general public. 
•Ability to read, understand and interpret building and subdivision, plans, specifications and related construction documents. 

•Position could be full-time or part-time

Codes Clerk

Clerk 1, Code Enforcement Office (full-time)                                                       

The Town of Van Buren is seeking someone with outstanding customer service skills to serve in the role of Clerk 1 in Code Enforcement Office. This is a full-time position, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday working at the Town Hall.

Under immediate supervision, an employee in this class performs routine clerical work in compliance with written guidelines and procedures. Detailed instructions are received at the beginning of work for any new assignments, but regular routine assignments are performed more independently and some initiative and judgment is utilized as experience is gained. Thinking “outside of the box” is critical in this role.  Assignments to the employee include the use of standard office equipment where conditions of the work do not necessitate previous training in their use. Work is supervised and often reviewed by superiors upon completion for content and accuracy. Although the varied tasks and activities performed may include those typical of other entry-level clerical classes such as Typist, these activities usually occupy only a minor part of the overall job and are done in support of the basic activities.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Must have experience and be proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) – Test will be given
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Be able to work with time constraints and under pressure at times.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage the workload
  • Ability to clearly communicate with others.
    • Working knowledge of general office terminology, procedures, equipment, and clerical techniques.
    • Ability to perform clerical operations with letters and numbers.
    • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to perform arithmetic computation and tabulations accurately and with reasonable speed.
    • Ability to learn assigned tasks readily and to adhere to departmental routines.
    • Ability to use common office equipment including equipment having alphanumeric keyboards, photocopiers, and CRTs.
    • Clerical aptitude.
  • Starting salary $25.85/hr.

Park Attendant (Part-Time) - Parks and Recreation Dept.

To work at Van Buren Central Park. This part-time position oversees the park during evening & weekend hours, 15-21 hours a week. There is light maintenance required. The position runs from April 1st through mid-November. Applicants must be 17 years of age, possess a valid NYS driver’s license, and enjoy working with the public. $17.00 per hour.

Building/Fire Inspector

Building/Fire Inspector:
PREFERRED:  Current NYS BIS certification

•Possess a good working knowledge and understanding of the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code including the New York State Energy Code. 

• Strong organizational, communication skills.

• Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative relationship with public officials, business owners, and the general public. 

•Position is part-time
